Velvet skin

While glossy, pleasantly dewy complexions were a big trend this summer, autumn 2013 requires a whole new texture: velvet. Imagine luxurious, semi-matte skin that begs to be touched. Diorskin Airflash Matte Touch, left, £30 (020 7216 0216) mists on over foundation to leave you with a powdered finish that feels like velvet, and — more importantly — really will last all the working day. And pack away S/S 13’s shades of peach too, pale is interesting this season.

Plum pouts

Get ready to kiss your Cupid’s bow goodbye, the A/W 13 catwalk’s were covered with “bleeding”, definition-less lips in a range of berry shades. Create Marni’s no-fuss, soft-focus effect — which looks as though lipstick had been applied before being “chewed off” — for the office by roughly filling yours in with a plum-toned crayon, before gently buffing a cotton wool bud around the edges. (Try NARS AW Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Mysterious Red, left, £17.50 narscosmetics.co.uk).

Perspex eyes
“Imagine your eyes have been Shellac-ed,” says MAC’s UK director of make-up artistry, Terry Barber. For all those not au fait with high-gloss Shellac nail treatments, that means this season’s lids look as if they’ve been wrapped in cellophane. Turn up the natural skin tone of your lids with MAC’s Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Camel Coat, below, £15 (maccosmetics.co.uk) — before adding the Perspex-like finish with a pop of clear lip gloss in the corners of the eye. Alternatively, you can always go plastic fantastic like the model’s at Hakaan’s A/W12 show by smearing it over the entire lid.

The tomboy flush

No matter how much overtime you put in, it’s important to look naturally fresh-faced at all times. “Think that kind of tomboy, ‘just off the sports field’ vibe embodied by Cara Delevingne,” says Revlon’s global artistic director, Gucci Westman. To get that glow, put down your brushes and use your fingers to blend Revlon’s new Peach Skinlights, right, £11.99 (boots.com) into the hollow of cheekbones.

Vampish nails

Baby pink is fine for the beach, but as the nights draw in, switch to rich, saturated shades like the dark ones Michelle Williams is modelling for Louis Vuitton’s A/W13 campaign. Buff nails and keep them short and rounded (dark polish + talons = predatory not chic). Look to Lancôme, which is launching three dark Vernis in Love shades, right, designed to complement the brand’s L’Absolu Desir lippies, and Burberry’s Oxblood and Poppy Black polishes.
