Over the Wall Charity

Last night I was invited to go to PwC in the City to attend a talk about a wonderful charity called Over the Wall.

Over the Wall is a national children's charity.  Their purpose is to provide life-changing experiences to children and young people aged 8-17 years old who are affected by serious and life limiting illnesses.  They do this by offering free activity camps specifically developed to foster coping, resilience, self-esteem and confidence.

When I arrived I was greeted by some of the Camp Leaders and there was a genuine warmth in the room.  After the initial chat and glass of wine it was time to hear more about the camp.  There was audience participation as well.  You can imagine a room of business people being asked for audience participation!!!   You heard from the Camp leaders and also from some of the children who have attended Camp and how their lives have been changed.  It was impossible not to be moved by these children's stories.  Incredible.

The one thing about Over the Wall is that as much as they need support they are also producing excellent research through their camps on children with severe illnesses. I have listed some of them below:

Children’s Perspectives of Therapeutic Recreation

Children’s Voices: Qualitative Data
Outcome Effectiveness of Therapeutic Recreation
Therapeutic Recreation Camping Programme
Paul Newman, Sick Children and Hole in the Wall
Safety of Summer Camp for Children with Chronic and/or Life-Threatening Illnesses
Camp: A Rite of Passage

Over The Wall is the only residential camp in the UK structured on the late Paul Newman’s renowned ‘Hole in the Wall Gang Camp’. As Paul Newman put it “A place where kids can kick back, relax and raise a little hell”.

At the end of the evening, everyone had opened up and were so enthused about Over the Wall and how their companies could help.

Me, well I have volunteered to go an help at one of the camps for a week.  It will be an honour to give up a week of my time to go and volunteer with this amazing charity.

Go on take a peek at what they do.  You know you want to!! http://www.otw.org.uk
